To shed light on the executive branch's stonewalling, American Oversight today filed two lawsuits for records of communications between the White House and five Trump administration agencies.

Lawsuit filed by American Oversight against four Trump administration agencies — the General Services Administration, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of the Treasury, and the Department of Commerce — for communications from White House officials regarding congressional oversight. American Oversight seeks these records as they may detail efforts by the White House to obstruct congressional investigations.

Department of the Treasury stated that it had no records of final assessments on the impact of a rule allowing certain tax-exempt organizations to exclude donor information from their annual tax returns. American Oversight asked for records reflecting final assessments of the potential or actual impact of the donor disclosure rule, including records addressing the costs and consequences of the changes to donor disclosure requirements.

Internal Revenue Service stated that it would not provide these records regarding a request for communications as “return information of a third party are confidential and may not be disclosed unless specifically authorized by law.” American Oversight sought communications concerning a draft memo concluding that the Department of Treasury is required to produce any tax return information requested by the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.
