The Supreme Court’s decision on Tuesday to allow the Trump administration to ban most transgender people from military service reignited questions over whether any actual military or national security considerations dictated the discriminatory policy.

Department of Defense records regarding President Donald Trump’s tweets on July 26, 2017, announcing that transgender persons were no longer permitted to serve in the military. Records, including communications between 8:55 a.m. and 12 p.m. that day suggest that the Defense Department was caught off-guard by the policy statement of the president.

American Oversight sued the Department of Defense (DOD) in federal court to determine if President Trump was telling the truth when he claimed on Twitter that "generals" had advised him to ban transgender individuals from serving in the armed forces.
