HHS Communications Regarding the Office of Women’s Health

Records from the Department of Health and Human Services in response to American Oversight’s request for records regarding the Office on Women’s Health. These documents were sought with the Sunlight Foundation.

On page 357 of the December 2019 production, there is an email regarding “unapproved condom imagery” and a request for the fact sheet containing the images to be removed. Using these documents, Kaiser Health News reported that HHS had removed the condom images from an HIV awareness flier.

On page 303 of the May 2020 production is an email from a web designer in the Office of Women’s Health. “I was reviewing the new Sexual Health content and I fear it will not make it through clearance. I might have to tone it down a little,” they wrote on Feb. 24, 2017.

On page 414 of the same production, a consultant in the office emailed the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health on Oct. 8, 2016, proposing the creation of social media messages about sexual assault and coercion, “in light of the Trump video.” Given the date, we assume the consultant was referring to the Access Hollywood tape.
